The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as the people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. This poignant and emotional tribute to the men, women and children killed in the terrorist attacks is a must-do when in New York. I truly found it one of the most beautiful and moving memorials I have ever visited.
The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood and the Memorial design was selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations.
The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.
The two reflection pools allow you to truly reflect, honour, pay tribute and understand the true scale of the horrific events that took place here.
At the time of our visit to NYC you could either purchase your tickets in advance at the memorial shop or reserve them online for a donation of your choice. There are obviously a number of security checks to pass through before you get to the memorial however the process is quite fast and staff are professional and efficient.
The National September 11 Memorial a very moving memorial, so take your time to walk around and pay your respects.
