Located on iconic Park Lane in Mayfair, Lanes of London is a modern, elegant British restaurant and bar. We were in London for my Birthday weekend and ticking off quintessential English experiences before we head back to Australia, which included a high class Afternoon Tea experience! We had a wonderful afternoon at Lanes of London enjoying delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones and a beautiful selection of pastries and desserts in a elegant and relaxed atmosphere.
Lanes of London is situated in a gorgeous Edwardian mansion which overlooks Hyde Park and Marble Arch, literally footsteps from the Marble Arch tube station. The restaurant is elegant and stylish with interior and decor that incorporates marble, green leather lounges, aged brass and oak and antique detailing. It is a very stylish restaurant that had a wonderfully relaxed environment and atmosphere. The staff were lovely and friendly and wonderfully attentive throughout our visit ensuring we were well looked after and happy with all aspects of our afternoon tea.
We were very impressed with their wide selection of teas which included a variety of Black, White, Oolong, Green, Puerth and Herbal Infusion Teas. Dan chose the Peppermint Leaf herbal infusion which had deep and full mint flavours which he really enjoyed, whilst I chose the Flowering Osmanthus Green Tea at the recommendation of our lovely waiter. It was a sweet and soothing green tea with an explosive orange osmanthus flower. I am a big green tea drinker, and I was very pleased with the recommendation as I found it a great accompaniment to our afternoon tea. Our tea was topped up regularly throughout our afternoon whenever we required it and they were more than happy to prepare fresh tea pots rather than simply top up our hot water if we so desired.
We were asked if we had any allergies, dietary requirements or if there was anything that we just didn’t like before our sandwiches arrived. Luckily we eat pretty much everything and a few minutes later our sandwiches were brought to us, presented beautifully on beautiful wooden boards. We each had beetroot toast bread with smoked salmon & cream cheese, a poppy seed bin lid roll with honey glazed ham, mustard & melted cheese, basil toast bread with cucumber & mint and an egg mayonnaise & cress bagel with quail egg. My favourite was the basil toast bread with cucumber and mint, whilst Dan loved the poppy seed roll with honey glazed ham and melted cheese! The sandwiches were lovely & delicate whilst still being full of flavour and made using the freshest of ingredients, just as afternoon tea should be!
Lanes of London perfectly describe their afternoon tea and pastries as “Artisan baking with a focus on indulgence and gluttony!”
Shortly after we’d finished with our sandwiches our beautiful three tiered Afternoon Tea Stand arrived! The stand was beautifully presented and looked like a work of art with each item mouthwateringly delicious.
The bottom level contained beautiful, warm freshly baked scones served with delicious devon clotted cream and lovely sweet, homemade strawberry jam. We each had a plain and a sultana scone which were beautifully baked and were so delicious they disappeared very quickly, along with the clotted cream and strawberry jam!
Our middle tier had beautiful cheesecake macarons, which were very generous sized macarons and were bursting with incredible cheesecake flavour which we both loved!
By this stage we were both very full so had a little break before tucking into the beautiful sweets on the top level.
The top tier was a gorgeous selection of Lanes Pastries made up of a lemon raspberry bakewell cake coated in chocolate, mouthwatering shortbread with tantalising passionfruit cream tear drop meringues and a beautiful green tea mousse wrapped in a colourful white chocolate layer. Each dessert was delicate and delicious and our favourite was certainly the shortbread with passionfruit cream & tear drop meringues and we also loved the uniqueness and flavours of the green tea mousse with the white chocolate.
We had a wonderful table by the window and were able to relax all afternoon in the lovely sunshine watching the world past by outside. We were not rushed at all by our waitstaff and could have stayed for as long as we liked. We were very full by the end of our afternoon tea and so our waiter recommended a glass of Amaretto which was the perfect compliment to our afternoon tea and a great way to finish our meal.
We had a wonderful afternoon relaxing at Lanes of London, it is a beautiful venue in an exclusive neighbourhood and all aspects of our afternoon tea were delicious and very satisfying! Lanes of London is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon tea experience and is well worth the price of £39 per person!
We recommend not eating lunch before you arrive because you will want to be able to eat all the delicious treats you are served up throughout the afternoon! We would certainly recommend Lanes of London for anyone looking for a top afternoon tea experience in London, we loved it!
