Mezzatorre Resort & Spa is a five star hotel located in Forio d’ Ischia, surrounded by seven hectares of pinewood and perched on the cliffs overlooking it’s own private bay and is truly a piece of paradise. It’s origins are as a defence against the raids of the Saracen army and the antique 16th century lookout tower has been tastefully and skilfully renovated without altering it’s original design to retain its incredible history. We fell in love with Mezzatorre when we visited in 2014 at the end of the summer season and jumped at the opportunity to return to this hotel which well and truly deserves its membership of The Leading Hotels of the World collection. Mezzatorre Resort & Spa is a luxurious, secluded hotel which enjoys an enviable, beautiful seafront position. The hotel also boasts its own private thermal source, an extensive spa, three indoor pools, an outdoor seawater pool, its own private beach, two incredible restaurants and seven hectares of natural pine wood. A visit to Mezzatorre is good for the mind, body and soul and we left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after our return to one of our favourite places in the world.
The hotel has 42 beautiful rooms and 12 gorgeous suites and we were staying on one of the brand new Deluxe Tower Suites located in the tower which had the most incredible terrace with sea views. Our room had a beautifully soft king sized bed, a sofa bed, table and chairs and modern amenities including air conditioning, a mini bar, TV and hair-dryer. Our room was beautiful and designed to ensure everything was provided to ensure the ultimate in comfort and relaxation. We love the calming, natural interiors and decor at Mezzatorre which are warm, soothing & relaxing. Every detail of the rooms has been designed to keep away stress and let you rewind and relax in comfort to ensure that you leave feeling better than when you arrived.
Our spacious marble bathroom was gorgeous with a separate rainfal shower and Jacuzzi bathtub, double marble washbasin with luxurious toiletries, high quality towels and soft, fluffy bathrobes. It was a very luxurious bathroom that left you feeling pampered and wonderfully relaxed.
Our room was stunning, elegant and luxurious and one of the highlights was without a doubt our enormous private terrace which boasted views of both the sea and the resort. It was a stunning terrace with table and chairs as well as sun loungers and an umbrella and we spent many hours relaxing there during our time at Mezzatorre. We were also lucky enough to catch two stunning sunsets from our terrace which was a magical experience we’ll never forget!
Mezzatorre is truly a piece of paradise, a tower perched on a rocky headland which overlooks the breathtakingly blue sea. The hotel’s seven hectares of pine wood forest that surveys the sea from the headland is Ischia’s most beautiful natural spot, filled with lush Mediterranean scrub and old trees. The hotel has a well equipped gym in addition to the workout areas, jogging and trekking paths which snake around the hotel grounds.
The hotel features three indoor pools and one heated, saltwater outdoor pool. We spent most of our time relaxing and swimming in the outdoor pool which has majestic views of the Gulf of Naples and its faraway islands. The pool also has a snack bar and plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas ensuring the highest level of relaxation and is also surrounded by elegant terraces filled with lush gardens of subtropical plants. Mezzatorre also has a private beach which is a peaceful and relaxing oasis and it is a wonderful experience to swim in the beautiful, crystal clear waters of the bay.
Mezzatorre’s Health & Beauty Center is a sanctuary of well-being set in the picturesque 16th-century watchtower. The warm waters of the resort’s own thermal spring flow into the three indoor pools where the century-old tradition of Ischia’s thermal baths provides guests with sessions of balneotherapy, mud scrubs, and beauty treatments. The pools and thermal waters create a full body relaxation experience and guests benefit from the rich, healthy effects of the thermal waters. Every detail contributes to an experience of deep mind-and-body relaxation. All the treatments use the therapeutic thermal water flowing at 45° from the hotel’s private spring.
Breakfast is served in the beautiful Chandelier restaurant and guests also have the option of dining on the panoramic terrace which overlooks the sea. Mezzatorre’s passion for wellbeing is evident in their buffet breakfast which a rich spread of locally sourced, authentic and freshly made breakfast items. The buffet has a wide selection of freshly made pastries, cakes and breads, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cheeses, meats, hot breakfast items and eggs cooked to order, freshly squeezed juices, tea and coffee The buffet breakfast is one of the best we’ve had in hotels during our travels and is truly a wonderful, healthy and relaxing way to start the day in paradise!
The Resort’s two beautiful restaurants, Chandelier and Sciué Sciué draw inspiration from the rich gastronomical culture of Ischia, creating unique dishes using the highest quality, locally sourced, seasonal produce. We dined in the beautiful, elegant Chandelier restaurant one evening during our stay and it was an evening of fine wine, excellent service and incredible food that we certainly won’t forget any time soon.
Our evening began with freshly baked breads served with olive oil and a welcome glass of the finest quality Prosecco which was the perfect beginning to an incredible evening. Shortly after arrival we were presented with a beautiful appetiser of tempura pumpkin flower served with a pea puree. It was light, cooked perfectly and full of mouthwatering flavours which was an excellent sign of the things to come throughout the evening.
With the recommendation of our professional, friendly waiter we chose a local 2013 Nero70 red wine from Ischia. It was an excellent recommendation which matched perfectly with our dishes and we enjoyed every last drop of the bottle!
Dan chose the Mezzatorre Style Cold Veal in Tuna Sauce for his entree, whilst I opted for the Greek Salad and we were both very happy with our choices. Dan loved the combination of flavours which worked together perfectly in his dish and I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious flavours and fresh ingredients of my Greek Salad.
For his first course Dan chose the Risotto with Shellfish and Pumpkin Blossoms. He enjoyed it so much that he hasn’t stopped talking about the dish since! It was a very generous sized serving with a wonderful rich, seafood flavour and perfectly cooked prawns throughout.
I chose the Spaghetti with Grilled Tomatoes and Vegetables which was again a very generous sized serving and was so rich and full of wonderful flavours of tomatoes and vegetables combined with the delicious, home made, perfectly cooked pasta.
Since we left England over a month ago we’ve eaten more seafood than any other type of meat and have loved every dish. This meant that we both chose the Seared Mixed Seafood served on a Lemon Flavoured Potato Cream for our main dish. The creamy sauce was full of wonderful lemon flavour and the seafood comprised of squid, cod, prawn and a type of red snapper called dentex. Every aspect of the dish was cooked to perfection and worked together to create a wonderful seafood meal and both our plates were empty by the end which was certainly a very good sign of how much we enjoyed the meal and were both glad we ordered the same dish, or one of us would have been very jealous of the other!
Despite being very full we couldn’t bypass desert so chose an Apple Strudel with Cinnamon Sauce and a Capri Style Chocolate Cake and decided we would share. Both desserts were wonderful and sweet and like every dish of the night were presented beautifully! Our favourite of the two would certainly have been the Capri Style Chocolate Cake as we both have a very sweet tooth for chocolate and it was absolutely divine!
We finished our magical evening at Chandelier Restaurant off with perfect Italian coffees and a wonderful surprise of a selection of five mini luxe chocolates which were the perfect way to end a perfect evening! If you’re staying at Mezzatorre, we highly recommend taking the opportunity to dine at Chandelier Restaurant during your stay. The service was impeccable, the restaurant and ambiance beautiful and the food was fine dining at its very best. Every aspect of our meals was incredible, the ingredients and produce were fresh and our dishes were cooked to perfection.
Our stay at Mezzatorre was absolutely magical and we literally haven’t stopped talking about it since we left. Mezzatorre is good for both the body and soul and is without a doubt still our favourite hotel in the world. Many of our readers will know we’re getting married in November 2017 and we haven’t yet planned our honeymoon and after our two incredible visits to Mezzatorre we truly don’t know how anywhere in the world could beat the magical island of Ischia and the five star paradise that is Mezzatorre Resort & Spa. We have no doubts that we’ll return one day and couldn’t more highly recommend this incredible place for a relaxing, pampering and luxurious getaway in paradise!
