The Southern island region of Japan is unlike any Japan you have ever known. This chain of semi-tropical, coral reef fringed islands that are teeming with marine life will leave you wondering if you are in fact in Japan or are holidaying in Hawaii or Southeast Asia. The Okinawa Prefecture comprises more than 150 islands in the East China Sea between Taiwan and the Japanese mainland and is famous for its tropical climate, stunning beaches, world-class coral reefs and diving, as well as its World War II sites. It is an ideal destination for your next holiday and all you need to do is watch the Be. Okinawa video at the end of our post and I am sure you will also be convinced to add it to your bucket list.
The Okinawa Prefecture is the most southern prefecture in Japan. The prefecture consists of three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands, the Miyako Islands and the Yaeyama Islands. These island chains stretch over a thousand kilometre from Kyushu to Taiwan.
The islands are also called the Ryukyu Islands and are named after their native culture. The culture of the Okinawa islands is completely different to the rest of Japan and they celebrate their unique language, cuisine and way of life. Their unique culture comes from the fact that for the majority of their history they were a separate country and still embrace their individuality.
The climate of Okinawa is ideal, with subtropical temperatures that barely fall below 15 degrees during winter. Divers and island lovers alike will love the seas that surround the islands, which have what many consider the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. Thanks to these coral reefs and wide variety of marine life, snorkelling and scuba diving are some of the top attractions for visitors to Okinawa!
Eco tourism abounds in the Okinawa Islands and nature lovers will drool over the beaches and waters, as well as the lush, subtropical jungles and the stunning cherry blossoms which you can experience without the crowds that flock to the rest of Japan.
There are so many reasons to visit this beautiful prefecture of Japan and I don’t know about you but we are certainly convinced and if you need more inspiration, don’t miss the Be. Okinawa video below! You’ll want to book your flights after seeing it!
