“… and New York is the most beautiful city in the world? It is not far from it. No urban night is like the night there. Squares after squares of flame, set up and cut into the aether. Here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will.”
This quote from Ezra Pound perfectly describes my feelings toward this crazy, beautiful city. I was born and raised in Italy, while dreaming of New York and the “American Dream”. As soon as I got engaged, I knew exactly where I wanted to spend my honeymoon. My fiance and I picked New York immediately and certainly weren’t disappointed by our decision. Here are our top 10 Reasons to go on Honeymoon to New York.
1. ROW A BOAT ON CENTRAL PARK LAKE
I think there is nothing more romantic than taking a rowboat and appreciating a quiet ride through bamboo patches, under bridges, and past beautiful trees at the Central Park Lake. We went there on a Sunday morning, after a late breakfast and rented a boat. We spent a couple of hours chatting, enjoying the sunny day and admiring the incredible and iconic scenes around us. It’s a fairy tale experience and something that is certainly worth doing when in New York, especially whilst on your honeymoon! It’s the perfect place for a romantic date with your loved one. You can rent a boat at the Loeb Boathouse daily, from April to October.
2. ENJOY A ROMANTIC DINNER ON THE HUDSON RIVER
Another unforgettable memory we cherish from our honeymoon is our romantic dinner on the Hudson River. We boarded at Chelsea Piers and we enjoyed a delicious candlelight dinner while sailing around the bay. The night cruise lasted around 3 hours during which we had the opportunity to admire some of the most iconic New York locations such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. We booked our dinner cruise with the Bateaux New York company, and highly recommend this experience to honeymooners and visitors alike as it’s a very tranquil, magical way to experience the city and its sites!
3. CATCH A SUNSET FROM THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
There is no doubts that the panorama from the Empire State Building is breathtaking, but to enjoy it with your significant other at sunset is an experience that can’t easily be described or forgotten. It’s a delightful, delicate and intimate moment, and one we recommend to all love-birds visiting New York City! We spent sunset in each other’s arms, staring at the horizon, admiring the endless colors of the amazing sunset. There was no need for words and we guarantee all who experience it will never forget it.
4. GET LOST IN THE BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of the best places in New York City for a romantic date. The Shakespeare Garden is an enclosed cottage garden, filled with flowers and plants mentioned in the poet’s sonnets. The Cranford Rose Garden is another must-do as it features more than 1,000 stunning types of roses! It is a must-visit, especially during the peak blooming season and visitors to the gardens can experience a lovely, elegant lunch at the Yellow Magnolia Cafe.
5. TAKE A WALK ON THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE
A visit to New York wouldn’t be complete without a romantic stroll along the Brooklyn Bridge. The entry point to the bridge is on Washington Street and is accessible 24 hours a day. Before heading there we picked up some coffee so we could enjoy our breakfast alfresco. It’s obviously impossible to expect to enjoy the experience by yourselves but, if you choose to visit the Bridge early in the morning (like we did) or late in the evening, you will very likely share this experience with just a small number of others!
6. ENJOY A PICNIC IN CENTRAL PARK
Central park is such an iconic part of New York and is so big that you will be spoiled with choice for the perfect picnic spot. It’s a simple, but wonderful way to spend some time with your “better half” and enjoy a delicious picnic outdoors. Your only “worry” is ensuring that you’ve chosen all your favorite foods and packed your picnic basket! Be aware of the cheeky squirrels, they will try to steal your food, so be prepared and bring some nuts with you to give them. They will be thrilled to play with you and keep you company.
7. SEE A BROADWAY SHOW
Seeing a Broadway Show is a tremendously popular thing to do in New York. It can be a little expensive, but will certainly make your honeymoon unforgettable. You can also see in advance which shows are running and choose which one you wish to attend by checking the Broadway official website.
8. HAVE DINNER AT THE HARD ROCK CAFÉ
If like us, you are a music lover, you can’t miss a stop at the famous Hard Rock Café, which is located in the heart of the city, near Times Square. The Hard Rock Café features some incredible memorabilia of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and others, and on its website, you can check the calendar of the shows which will allow you to organise your visit there. Live music, good food, and fresh beer will make your evening simply perfect.
9. PEOPLE WATCH AT GRAND CENTRAL STATION
Who doesn’t love people watching?! If you want a fun, relaxing and unconventional afternoon you can spend a few hours at Grand Central Station, grab a coffee and watch the people and hustle and bustle around you, imagining their stories, what they do and where they are going!
10. MARVEL IN AWE AT TIMES SQUARE
To finish off our New York City honeymoon is the most iconic, crazy, and photographed square in the world… Times Square! Enjoy a walk, take plenty of pictures and try to take it all in! Take your time to admire the creative street artists that perform in the area, and you can even participate in one of the many activities organized every day such as yoga or dance lessons! Times Square is one of my favorite spots in New York; it’s never boring and never the same and truly makes me feel at the center of the world.
If you choose New York as your honeymoon destination too, then we’re sure that you’ll come home with countless, precious memories to cherish forever.
