The highlight of our Iceland trip was the crystal ice cave tour on Vatnajokull Glacier that we took with Extreme Iceland. Exploring the ice caves, surrounded by the bluest of blue ice is a once in a lifetime experience and one that we will never forget.
We met in the carpark of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where we were fitted with crampons, helmets and headlamps. We then jumped into the supertruck where we drove for about half an hour onto Vatnajokull glacier and across the ice! It was a bumpy, crazy ride and the feeling of driving on a glacier was so surreal!
We pulled up in front of the ice caves and while it was quite scary walking on the ice initially, once we realised that the crampons gripped really well on the ice, we felt comfortable enough to start exploring!
We spent about 45 minutes exploring the ice caves. The brilliant white and sapphire blues of the ice was mesmerising. The guide spent time explaining about how the ice caves were formed and why the glacier was so many beautiful shades of blue.
It’s impossible to put into words just how beautiful the glacier and the ice waves were. We literally felt like we were on the set of Frozen the movie, but in real life!
The tour was absolutely incredible! Driving and walking on a glacier was one of the most amazing experiences we’ve ever had travelling. If you visit Iceland in winter then you absolutely have to do an ice caves tour!
We booked our Crystal Ice Cave Tour with Extreme Iceland and for four adults it was ISK 91,960 which was $1,080 Australian dollars.
Like everything in Iceland, it isn’t cheap but the experience was worth every cent!
