Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is located in southeast Iceland and is one of the most spectacular places we’ve ever seen, I was actually speechless (something that does not happen often)! The glacier lagoon is filled with the bluest of blue icebergs that have broken off from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier which is part of enormous Vatnajökull Glacier. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is connected to the Atlantic Ocean and over time, the huge icebergs float down the lagoon towards the ocean, and eventually wash up on the black sand beaches nearby.
Seeing the enormous icebergs floating in the lagoon is magical. They are each unique in size, colour and shape. White, greenish hues and bright blue colours all shine though the ice along with some grey/black lines and shadows, remnants of ash from previous volcanic erruptions.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is nature at its most beautiful.
Words honestly don’t do this magical place justice… so hopefully some of our favourite photos from our visit will help show just how spectacularly beautiful it truly is!
Words simply don’t do Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon justice! In fact, words don’t do many places in Iceland justice. Jökulsárlón is without a doubt, one of the most spectacularly beautiful places we have ever seen and I honestly doubt there are many places that even come close in comparison!
Arriving just after sunrise and leaving mid-afternoon gave us almost a full day to explore the lagoon at various times of the day, visit Diamond Beach and do our glacier tour. Each time we came back to the lagoon, the colours of the lagoon, sky and ice kept evolving and changing throughout the day. Other than the glaciers, I’ve never seen blue like it! I know I sound like I am gushing, but it truly was that spectacular.
If you’re planning a visit to Iceland, we recommend doing everything you can (safely of course) to get across to this part of the country. Some companies do day tours from Reyjkavik however it would be a loooooong day! We stayed at one of the closest hotels, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon which was an excellent hotel.
Have you been to Jökulsárlón?
