Miami is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the US. I was lucky enough to spend time here after finishing my summer at Camp Blue Ridge. Miami offers beautiful beaches, tropical islands, rich culture, luxury hotels and world-class restaurants, national parks and is the home of many of the worlds rich and famous! Here are our five favourite things to do in Miami.
Experience the Florida Everglades
The Florida Everglades National Park is a 1.5 million acre wetland area that has been declared a World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve and Wetland of International Importance. The Everglades is home to hundreds of animal species including the leatherback turtle, Florida panther, alligators, a vast array of birdlife and the West Insian manatee.
There are many ways to explore the Florida Everglades, which are only half an hour from Miami. We took an airboat tour from Gator Park that allowed us to see hundreds of alligators and so many bird species in their native habitat! It was a really cool experience that gave us an insight into how epic the Everglades are! It’s pretty amazing that this natural beauty is such a shirt drive away from the city!
Take a Day Trip to Key Biscayne
Key Biscayne is only a 15 minute drive from downtown Miami and boasts some of the best beaches in Florida! We crossed over the scenic Rickenbacker Causeway to Key Biscayne and I couldn’t believe how quickly we’d left behind the buzz of city life and escaped to a tropical island paradise!
Key Biscayne was once a coconut plantation and is still covered in palm trees, giving it the ultimate tropical island vibes! We spent a day exploring the coast, swimming at the beach, visiting the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse and dining at laid back, beach front restaurants.
Key Biscayne also has nearby coastal barrier reefs and is known for great diving!
Visit Little Havana
Little Havana is a neighbourhood in Miami that is the home to Cuban exiles as well as many migrants from Central and South America. It is a colourful neighbourhood with Latin-inspired cafes, markets, shops that sell Latin inspired goods from cigars to Cuban coffee to artwork, locals playing dominoes in parks and Latin American music playing in every direction you go. It’s a great taste of multicultural Miami!
Jump onboard a boat tour of Miami’s Celebrity Homes
Miami is glitzy and glamorous and there is no shortage of wealthy, famous celebrities that call it home. We took a boat cruise of Miami, Star Island, Palm Island and Biscayne Bay that gave us a scenic cruise as well as being able to see the beautiful homes of countless rich & famous celebrities! It is an incredible insight into the luxury lifestyle these celebrities live.
Explore South Beach
South Beach is my favourite neighbourhood in Miami. It has postcard perfect beaches, luxury hotels, at deco architecture, outdoor dining and world-class museums. The beaches are stunning with perfect white sand, blue skies, crystal clear water and colourful lifeguard towers! South Beach is also the perfect place for people watching, with beautiful, fit people everywhere you look!
