On our trip to Tasmania at Easter, we stopped in at Coal River Farm to try their famous ‘high cheese’. Cheese lovers, I can confirm that it does not disappoint!
Coal River Farm is located about 15 minutes from Hobart in the suburb of Cambridge. It’s a beautiful area surrounded by farmlands and stunning scenery of the Coal River Valley! We stopped on our way from Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park to Hobart. Covington Hill Country
Coal River Farm is an award winning cheese and chocolate family business. It’s a working farm where you can sample cheese and chocolate, enjoy the restaurant and even pick your own fruit at various times of the year! We loved that upon entering the restaurant you could see the cheese and chocolate being made by hand!
There was plenty of parking, as well as seating indoors and out. The weather was cold and gloomy when we stopped in so we opted to sit in the restaurant and were lucky enough to get a lovely table by the window! The staff were super friendly and couldn’t have been more knowledgeable or helpful!
As I mentioned, we opted for the High Cheese which was $44/person and included our choice of cheeses, freshly made crackers, nuts, jams and a selection of delicious chocolates. You can also choose a drink to enjoy with your high cheese and whilst I was tempted by all their delicious sounding hot chocolates, I couldn’t pass up another chance to enjoy a glass of local Tasmanian wine.
It was a hard decision but we managed to choose the four cheeses that tempted us the most and opted for the staff to select us a choice of the more popular chocolates as we knew they would all be delicious!
It’s obviously not a cheap experience, but so worth it to be able to taste such high quality, delicious handmade cheeses and chocolates. The High Cheese experience gave us the taste of local Tassie cheese and produce we had been hoping for (and more)!
The restaurant was child friendly with a high chair and they made a delicious babychino for Addie and we let her try a few bits of cheese and crackers here and there which she was delighted with!
After our high cheese we headed outside so Addie could see the chickens and meet the resident goat! She was a big fan and the goat was very friendly and cute.
We had such a wonderful experience at Coal River Farm, loved every bite of our High Cheese and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Hobart that loves their cheese (and chocolate)!
